What is the function of smoke and heat extraction systems?

SHEV systems or smoke and heat extraction systems (the V stands for Ventilation) are an essential component of structural fire protection. In the event of a fire, they ensure that developing smoke and fire gases are transported from the inside of a building to the outside.

SHEV systems are usually triggered by the fire alarm system / fire detector or manually. To ensure that these systems function smoothly in an emergency, they require a powerful and reliable battery.

What are the functions of a smoke and heat extraction system?

As with fire protection in general and fire alarm systems, the main task of a SHEVS is to protect people and therefore lives. This is achieved by dissipating heat as well as fire and smoke gases from the burning building. In this way, complete smoke build-up can be prevented and escape routes remain recognisable and smoke-free. In addition, the smoke and heat extraction system helps the fire brigade to do its job by keeping the rescue and fire brigade access routes visible and usable.

Another task of the SHEVS is to prevent the building from overheating. This would not only have a significant negative impact on the living creatures inside, but also on the statics and general construction of the building. The system therefore contributes to the protection of people and material assets.

The different types of SHEV systems

A basic distinction is made between two main types: natural and mechanical smoke and heat extraction systems. There are also so-called smoke curtain systems for large buildings, such as shopping centres. In an emergency, these restrict smoke and fire gases to a specific area and ensure that they can then be channelled to the outside via a SHEVS.

Natural smoke extraction systems (NRA): NRA systems ensure that combustion products are extracted from the building through openings in the ceiling or walls. They have the advantage that the volume flow to be discharged also increases as the temperature rises. This form is therefore mostly used in single-storey buildings, such as warehouses, sports halls or production halls.

Mechanical smoke extraction systems have the advantage that they are not dependent on the thermal conditions in the room and therefore the full volume flow is already available for extraction at the start of the fire. This is why they are used in multi-storey buildings, basements (e.g. car parks), rooms without direct external walls and structurally connected rooms, such as shops with several floors.

Finally, a distinction can be made as to how the windows, flaps etc. are operated. This can be controlled pneumatically, electrically or pyrotechnically.

Which batteries or rechargeable batteries are suitable for SHEV systems?

To ensure that your smoke and heat extraction system works properly in an emergency, all components should be of high quality. Of course, this also applies to the rechargeable battery, which acts as a back-up battery in the event of a power failure to ensure that the system continues to function and performs its tasks fairly and trouble-free.

We recommend our SUN Battery 6V and SUN Battery 12V batteries for use in your SHEV systems. These AGM batteries are characterised by a high energy density and a wide range of dimensions and connection technologies.

Battery-Kutter offers you a large selection of VdS-approved batteries from our SUN Battery brand. They are characterised by high quality at a fair price. All batteries are maintenance-free lead-acid batteries and are ideally suited for use in safety-relevant systems from well-known manufacturers.
