Where are batteries used in intralogistics?

In intralogistics, various industrial trucks and other machines are used that rely on a traction battery to function. These are usually the following applications:

• Aerial work platforms
• Mobile workstations, e.g. for order picking
• Forklift trucks
• Automated guided vehicles (AGV)
• Industrial trucks.

In addition, more and more warehouses are endeavouring to switch from internal combustion vehicles to electric industrial trucks. This not only protects the environment but also the health of employees in logistics. At the same time, this results in an increased demand for batteries, rechargeable batteries, chargers and changing stations.

The right battery for AGVs

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are indispensable for a wide range of applications and tasks in intralogistics. The self-propelled conveyors are controlled automatically and do not require a human driver or contact for operation.

AGVs are usually powered by batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, such as our LiBrick series, are mainly used here. The advantage of Li-ion batteries for AGVs over lead-acid batteries is their higher energy density, the associated lower weight, the longer service life and the higher cycle stability of these batteries. They also have shorter charging times, enabling continuous operation and making battery changes largely superfluous. Lithium-ion batteries are also ideally suited for use in harsh conditions. They can cope with damp environments, shocks and vibrations and are therefore particularly suitable for use in intralogistics. The battery management system (BMS) that usually comes with them also monitors the voltage of each individual cell and provides information on the battery's condition.
